Trinidad Reflections

My 10 days in Trinidad for Carnival was wonderful. It entailed all the ingredients of a "never-gonna-stop-talking-about-that" trip.
We spent waayyy too much money, went to waaay too many parties, and had more than our fair share of aggravation, but it was all well worth it.

The whole fun of Carnival is not just the 2 days where you dress up in a costume and parade around the streets of Port of Spain, but it's all the parties (or "fetes" as we call them), that lead up to those 2 days! To give you an idea of how crazy things were, here is just a small sampling of our schedule:

Wednesday--Land at 1pm, out of airport by 2pm, run errands until 4pm, head to the beach to have some highly anticipated Shark and Bake at Maracas Bay (will post pictures)...get back to hotel at 6pm, short nap/shower, leave at 9:30pm for a Fete called Bacchanal Wednesday.

Thursday--Leave Bacchanal Wednesday at 4:30am, get back to Hotel around 5:15am, sleep until 10:30am, wake up, get ready for another Fete called Beach House, Leave hotel for Fete at 12pm, get to fete at 2pm (LOTS OF TRAFFIC in a little island like Trinidad.) Leave Fete at 10:30pm to pick up another friend, go to downtown port of spain at 11:30pm for a bite to eat, Hotel at 12:30am, catch up all night with friends and how fun the week is going to be, go to sleep at 4am

Friday--Wake up at 7am, get ready and leave for beach at 8am, arrive at beach at 8:45am...spend time ducking from the rain, eating, and meeting nice strangers until 12:15pm...
etc etc etc..

So you can see, we had a very precise itinerary that included lots of things, and little sleep.

One of the best parts of the week was J'Ouvert. We get to a location at 2am Monday morning, and pretty much, rub paint on other people, dance along the street, eat & drink and party until the sun comes up...then everyone gets hosed down (well, not everyone..only if you want to be..)...this finished at like 8-9am, and then that's carnival Monday so you have to get back to your hotel, change into parts of your costume, and then head out again for more partying on the road and dancing on the streets, drinking, eating, and craziness!!

After Carnival, we took a Day Trip to Tobago, which was AMAZING...the atmosphere is so peaceful and serence, but with the underlying fiestiness that defines any Caribbean nation.

We did have some setbacks, like losing a camera (that was my fault), losing a passport, catching colds/fevers...but it was definitely an experience that we will never forget, which makes all the ups and downs worth it!!!

I am going to post an album with some of the highlights of the trip.

ENJOY.

(oh yea--and shop Itsy Bitsy Bra Bar!!) LOL--Had to get that in there.
